Caritas is sounding the alarm – again above minus 20 degrees: Lower Austria remains a cold place

Date:

It will also remain bitterly cold in Austria on Wednesday. After minus 21.1 degrees was measured in Schwarzau im Freiwald on Tuesday, the thermometer also sounded the alarm a day later: minus 20.7 degrees. The low temperatures pose a great danger, especially for homeless people who often have no way to escape the bitter cold.

Minus 20.7 degrees in Schwarzau im Freiwald, minus 16.6 degrees in Weitra: Lower Austria is also the national cold pole on Wednesday. It is especially icy in the Mühlviertel and the Waldviertel. If you don’t want to be late for work, remove the ice from your car early.

A small plus degree is possible
But even in the federal capital, the low temperatures make residents shiver. This morning, minus 9.1 degrees were measured in Vienna. At minus 2.2 degrees it was the “warmest” in the west in Bregenz. However, during the course of the day, temperatures in some regions can even reach slightly above zero. Plus 3 degrees is most likely in the west in Vorarlberg, but also in Burgenland. However, the sun can be seen everywhere.

Waldviertel and Mühlviertel remain a pool of cold
The night will remain clear on Thursday, but temperatures will drop again to minus 15 degrees. It can also get colder in the Waldviertel and Mühlviertel and in the Inland Alps. Maximum daytime temperatures of 4 degrees can be reached. But there is still no noticeable heat. In addition, the wind turns west to northwest and increases moderate to strong, especially in the east and north of the country and at higher altitudes.

Warmer again by the weekend
From Friday there is a slight improvement in low temperatures in sight. During the day, temperatures up to 4 degrees are possible. The early temperatures are “only” between minus 12 and minus 2 degrees. On Sunday you could even count on plus 6 degrees.

Cold weather hits the homeless hard
In view of the icy cold, Caritas is once again sounding the alarm: since November, the cold line has received more than 5,800 calls in Vienna alone. “Last Monday there were about 200 calls,” Caritas Vienna director Klaus Schwertner said on the social media platform “X”.

The freezing temperatures have hit homeless people on the streets hard. Styria even registers three times as many calls as the year before. The emergency centers are up to 90 percent full.

Schwertner points out the use of the cold phone again: “Please keep your eyes open.” At the beginning of December, the cold phone in Austria was already heating up: on December 4, it was even minus 25 degrees in the country. That is about 4 degrees less than the day before.
