Martial law applies – separatists threaten to kill foreigners

Date:

The pro-Russian separatists have threatened to kill three captive foreigners who allegedly fought on the side of Ukraine. Accordingly, “investigations” against two Britons and a Moroccan have been completed. “The suspects could face the maximum penalty – the death penalty – subject to martial law,” a separatist prosecutor’s office said on Friday. The case has now been handed over to the court.

The Russian leadership had also threatened foreign fighters with severe penalties if they were captured. They would not be considered soldiers, Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.

Death penalty applies in separatist areas
There is no death penalty in Russia. But it applies in the pro-Russian separatist areas. There are also planned the trials against the Ukrainian militants of the Mariupol steel plant. Many of them belong to the Azov regiment, which is called a Nazi unit in the Russian media.

Azovstal: 78 women among prisoners of war
According to pro-Russian separatists, 78 are among the fighters imprisoned in the steel mill. The factory’s defenders also had “enough weapons” with them, said Donetsk separatist chief Denis Puschilin.

According to the separatist leader, six Ukrainian militants died at the steel plant “attempting to blow up ammunition depots before being captured”. According to Puschilin, foreigners in Russian captivity were also taken during the action. He did not give a specific number.
