This week’s sad results show how dangerous the current low temperatures can be: three people have frozen to death in Austria in the past four days. A fall in the cold could have been fatal for all three.
On Thursday afternoon, a passerby found a 78-year-old lying lifeless at the edge of the forest in Waldzell. The confused woman, who lived with her husband in a residential care center, had left the house in the early morning hours and never returned. The doctor who was immediately alerted could only determine that the woman was dead; she had frozen to death.
Dead person next to Liesingbach
Just a day later, a hiker in Vienna discovered a lifeless man. It was located next to the Liesingbach, near the Alterlaa residential park. For the man – his identity has yet to be clarified – all help came too late. An autopsy has yet to determine the cause of death. However, it is currently believed that he died of frostbite.
Fell on the way home
On Sunday morning, a hiker came across a lifeless man in Ober-Grafendorf, Lower Austria. As investigations have revealed, the 51-year-old resident was likely walking home on Sunday evening when he reportedly fell. Around 8:45 a.m. the hiker discovered him in a field in Rennersdorf. At that moment the man had already frozen to death.
Black ice forecast
Given the current temperatures, special caution is advised when going outside. Especially in the middle of the week, meteorologists predict not only persistent frost days, but also freezing rain and sleet: this increases the risk of falls.
