22 people have been found dead after a mine collapsed in northwestern Tanzania. An emergency services spokesman said on Sunday that the mine collapsed on Saturday after heavy rain. The rescue operation could only start late after the accident – on Sunday morning – due to a lack of equipment.
According to the information, the mine had already been closed by the operator for safety reasons before the collapse. However, it is not uncommon for young men in the region to dig for gold sand in the closed mines.
There have been repeated heavy rain showers in East Africa for weeks, caused by the weather phenomenon El Nino. As a result of these storms, landslides have repeatedly occurred in Tanzania. In December, sixty people were killed and more than a hundred injured in the north of the country.
