Thousands of people gathered around the Houston, Texas, US convention center this Friday to protest the celebration of the National Rifle Association Annual Conference (NRA, in English), after the Tuesday school shooting of that state.
The participants carried placards with messages such as “Ban assault rifles now,” “When are you going to love your kids more than guns?” and “Assault rifles are for murder.”
Numerous posters contain critical messages about the former US president. Donald Trump (2017-2021), who plans to speak this Friday at the NRA convention, with the Republican senator from Texas Ted Cruz and with the Texan governor, also conservative Greg Abbott
The NRA has decided to go ahead with this event, which will take place Friday through Sunday at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, despite numerous calls for it to be canceled following the deaths of 19 children and two teachers. a shooting at a school in Uvalde, Texas.
Abbott announced this Friday that he will finally not participate in the NRA conference, although a previously recorded video will be shown in which the conservative politician will give a few words to those in attendance.
On Thursday, country artists Don McAlean, Larry Gatlin and Larry Stewart reported that they had canceled performances scheduled for this weekend at the NRA meeting.
The NRA’s annual convention is: the biggest gathering of this pro gun lobby and is being celebrated after it was canceled in previous years during the covid-19 pandemic.
According to the Center for Responsible Politics’ Open Secrets database, the NRA has helped fund the political campaigns of hundreds of congressmen, both Democrats and Republicans.
