Residents in Waidring and the surrounding area in the Kitzbühel district recently felt the earth shake seven times – this was only noticeable on Tuesday morning around 4:50 am in St. Johann in Tirol with a magnitude of 4.0. What was probably unusual for the locals is not an unusual event for the experts – and even a good thing.
A series like this “is nothing unusual for us,” says Michael Strasser of the Institute of Geology at the University of Innsbruck. “In such a case we are talking about a series of earthquakes. In the Alpine region this can happen quite often.” Whether more noticeable earthquakes will hit the area in the near future “cannot be predicted,” he said. Throughout Austria there are more earthquakes every year than you would expect.
