Avalanche alarm Friday in the lower Pitztal, in the Stubai Valley and in the Zillertal in Tyrol: A large-scale search was underway in the municipality of St. Leonhard im Pitztal for an avalanche in the Tieflehn area. One person was seriously injured and two others were slightly injured. A winter sports enthusiast was also buried by an avalanche in the Stubai Valley.
According to initial reports, four people were buried in the Pitztal. The accident happened after 1 p.m. near Tieflehn. Initially it was said that the accident happened near Trankwald.
Seriously injured person flown to hospital
A major rescue operation was launched: three emergency medical helicopters, the Libelle Tirol and the mountain rescue service were deployed. The rescue operation was successful. All four people were rescued shortly after 1:30 p.m.
One alpinist suffered serious injuries and two people suffered minor injuries. An athlete escaped in horror. The injured were flown to hospital.
The person buried in the Stubai was probably lucky
Shortly afterwards, the emergency services had to rush to the Stubai Valley. An avalanche was reported in open terrain away from piste 10 of the Stubai Glacier. According to the police, one person was at least partially buried, a rescue operation was also launched with several helicopters and the Alpine Police and the mountain rescue service was also alerted.
Fortunately, the athlete – according to initial reports a variant rider – was quickly rescued. The crew of the emergency medical helicopter Christophorus 1 took care of the victim, who – also according to initial reports – was probably not injured more seriously.
No people buried in the Zillertal
Rescue workers were also deployed late Friday morning in Hochfügen in the Zillertal after an avalanche: according to the first report, two people were buried. However, on site it turned out that no one had been buried. Variant drivers probably caused the avalanche.
