Large-scale operation in Ulm – hostage takers were initially in charge of six people

Date:

According to security circles, the hostage taker at Münsterplatz in Ulm initially had six people in his power on Friday evening. This is evident from a situation report from the Ministry of the Interior. He then released five. He threatened a hostage with a gun and demanded that he be shot by police.

The perpetrator was seriously injured by shots from the emergency services and was taken to hospital. He underwent surgery there and is out of danger. The Baden-Württemberg State Police has taken over the investigation. The hostages were unharmed.

Motive still unclear
According to police, the motive is still unclear. The suspect left the store at Münsterplatz around 8:20 PM with a hostage to escape. At that moment the police fired. “We assume that the perpetrator was armed and posed a significant danger,” the prosecutor said.

According to security sources, the suspect was probably in the Bundeswehr. He had several pistols and long guns with him.

The police closed off Münsterplatz
According to police, the hostage situation started around 6:45 p.m. Officials had closed the central Münsterplatz in Ulm and the entrances there because of the operation.

Due to the use of firearms by the police, the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police (LKA) is also involved in the investigation into the hostage situation at Münsterplatz in Ulm. This often happens when the police shoot at people, a spokesperson for the Ulm Presidium explains. A special operations team was deployed. The spokesperson initially could not say how many officers fired and how often.
