Three US soldiers were killed and more than 40 others injured when a bomb-laden drone crashed into their base in Jordan on Sunday. According to media reports, misjudgment may have played a role in the fatal attack.
Several US media outlets reported on Monday, citing US government officials, that the enemy drone approached the base at the same time as a US surveillance drone. It was therefore initially unclear whether it was a friendly drone or an enemy drone.
The air defense reacted too late
As a result, air defense was not deployed immediately, it was said. However, two other drones were reportedly shot down at nearby locations. When asked, the Pentagon said Monday that the incident was still under investigation.
Pro-Iranian militias in Iraq claimed responsibility for the attack in Jordan, near the Syrian border, saying they had attacked four US military bases on Sunday morning, including three in Syria. Northeast Jordan borders both Syria and Iraq.
US President Joe Biden blamed “radical Iranian-backed militant groups” for the attack and threatened retaliation. According to the Wall Street Journal, US government officials said they are now considering attacks on militias in Iraq, Syria and possibly Iran. However, an attack on Iranian territory is a less likely scenario.
Republicans call for an attack on Iran
John Kirby, the National Security Council’s communications director, said Monday that they are “not looking for war with Iran.” Republicans in Congress, Biden’s opponents, instead called on the administration to take retaliatory measures directly against Iran. Senator Lindsey Graham, a foreign policy hardliner, said the US must strike “key targets” inside Iran itself to prevent future attacks: to “strike hard now.”
