A dramatic rescue operation and top medical performances saved a patient from death at the Vienna General Hospital.
The drama surrounding the 70-year-old started in Bad Aussee (Styria). Because a main artery in the Styrian’s body suddenly burst.
The chances of survival decreased by the minute to zero.
The acute medical problem: It was currently not possible to find a hospital in all of Austria that, as fate would have it, was not completely full of operations and could provide him with acute care. Only Vienna General Hospital, recognized worldwide for its heart surgery, felt able to perform emergency surgery. What aggravated the condition: the patient already had a bruise around the heart, which, however, was remedied by a doctor in Bad Aussee.
AKH’s heart chief took over
Also pure drama in Vienna: a heart transplant took place there at the same time. Nevertheless, Gerhard B., who was fighting for his life, was immediately hired by the team of the new head of cardiac surgery, Professor Daniel Zimpfer.
But before B. came under the scalpel of Professor Marek Ehrlich’s aortic surgeon, he had to be flown by helicopter to Amstetten (Lower Austria). Due to the bad weather, the rescue team took over the transport from there to the federal capital (on icy roads).
The Styrian was given life-saving anesthesia and operated on by senior physician Dr. Martin Andreas and his colleague Dr. Philipp Angleitner. B. is ‘infinitely grateful’ to his doctors.
