For the first time since the start of the war in Ukraine, head of state Volodymyr Zelenskyy has visited the east of the country. His office published a video in the Telegram shopping service on Sunday showing Zelenskyy wearing a bulletproof vest in and around Kharkov. The head of state announced that the destroyed houses would be rebuilt “in Kharkov and all other towns and villages where evil broke out”. He announced that he would defend the country “to the last man”.
“In this war, the occupiers are at least trying to squeeze something out of it,” Zelenskyy said. “But they must have long understood that we will defend our country to the last man. You don’t stand a chance. We will fight and we will win no matter what.”
Haven’t left Kiev since the start of the war
2,229 buildings in Kharkov and the surrounding area have been destroyed, said the Ukrainian president, who has stayed in the capital Kiev since the start of the war on Feb. 24. The video showed Ukrainian soldiers showing the president destroyed vehicles on the side of a dirt road.
During his visit, Zelenskyi also met the governor of the Kharkiv region and the mayor of Ukraine’s second largest city and spoke with them about the reconstruction.
At the beginning of their war of aggression, Russian troops bombed Kharkiv almost daily. With the relocation of Russian units to other regions in the east and south of the country, peace returned to Kharkiv, even though the eastern part of the city was repeatedly shelled.
