Four people have been arrested in Italy for allegedly smuggling drugs and mobile phones into prisons using drones. The four men are suspected of having delivered prohibited material in various ways to detention centers in the regions of Piedmont, Sicily, Marche, Campania and Abruzzo.
The drones were allegedly flown by one of the defendants led by convicts who assisted in the maneuvers from prison, according to an investigation carried out by prosecutors in the northern Italian city of Asti.
Smartphones illegally smuggled via drones were resold in prisons to other prisoners for a price of 1,000 euros. The costs for the smaller mobile phones were 300 euros per device. The gang is said to have made a profit of almost 100,000 euros between September and December 2023.
