With the distribution of school news on Friday, the first season of this year’s semester holidays begins in Vienna, Lower Austria and Vorarlberg for approximately 530,000 students.
They have a week off and are then replaced by children and young people in Tyrol, Salzburg, Carinthia and Burgenland. The third and final season, a week later, gives students in Styria and Upper Austria a week-long break.
Traffic jam warning
From Friday afternoon there are likely to be traffic problems at Vienna’s city exits; On Saturday, the accesses to ski areas will be particularly affected.
The idea behind spreading the semester break is to avoid overloading tourist areas and roads. Approximately the same number of children and young people should have time off in all three weeks. The first semester holiday season ends on February 11.
