White House investigates police action in Texas shooting

Date:

House Democrats and Republicans have begun to take steps to set a timetable for negotiations on a new law limiting gun ownership.

The US Department of Justice has announced that it will investigate the police response to the shooting at the Uvalde, Texas school, which killed 19 children and two teachers on Tuesday.

In a statement, Justice Department spokesman Anthony Coley announced that the investigation, the results of which will be made public, is being opened following a request from Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin, who called for police action. strongly doubted. its apparent slowness.

Texas Department of Public Safety director Steven McCraw admitted in a news conference Friday that the police officers’ failure to break into the door of the classroom where the gunman was found was a “wrong decision.” and blamed her on the highest ranking police officer in the school at the time.

Negotiations in Congress

At the political level, congressmen from the Democratic Party and Republican Party held a series of contacts over the weekend to try to set a timetable for negotiations on a new law that would restrict gun ownership.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, who described the contacts as “serious,” explained in statements to the ABC network that they could come up with concrete proposals within a week. “We have a short term,” he said, according to Bloomberg news agency.

Congressmen have addressed measures such as background checks, “red flag” laws — which allow police or family members to limit the right to possess guns by a judge — or more restrictive regulations on firearms storage, Murphy explained to CBS.

To make this initiative easier to go through, Democrats could agree to some of the Republicans’ demands, such as increasing security measures in schools. It is instead discarded due to a lack of support that limits high-capacity magazines. Nor does it appear that there is still sufficient support for raising the legal minimum age for gun ownership from 18 to 21 years.

Democrats have tried to pass gun control laws in recent years, especially since an attacker killed 27 people in 2012 at Sandy Hook College in Newtown, Connecticut, but Republicans and the more conservative wing of the Democratic Party have always blocked these kinds of initiatives.

US President Democrat Joe Biden, who visited the Texas town this weekend, has promised measures and urged to turn “pain into action.”
