About 150 people came to the Austrian Communist Youth’s Opera Ball demonstration on Thursday evening. As the protest march moved towards the Opernring, one person was arrested. The reason: property damage and an injured police officer.
The 30-year-old is said to have kicked in a side mirror of a parked car during the demonstration. Witnesses observed the incident and informed officers on site.
Police officer punched in the face
The police officers confronted the demo participant, and the man allegedly punched the officers and injured a police officer in the face. The 30-year-old was then temporarily arrested and later released.
Anti-Semitic slogans at demonstration
Pro-Palestinian activists also mingled with participants in the Opera Ball demonstration on Thursday evening. Eyewitnesses reported that several anti-Semitic slogans could also be heard.
The police had already cordoned off the ring and the surrounding streets near the opera in advance to ensure that the ball guests could arrive without problems. So no meeting took place between the demonstrators and the visitors of the festival.
