Escaped prisoner – trial in Vienna: 20 months in prison for “accomplices”

Date:

There is still no trace of Islam Y., a high-risk prisoner in Krems-Stein prison who managed to escape via an MRI scan on November 14, 2023. However, his accomplice was convicted by the Vienna Regional Court on Friday afternoon.

The man was sentenced to 20 months for causing serious bodily harm. Not legally binding. He called the victim and lured him out of his apartment under the pretext that he had something to discuss with him. The 31-year-old was then met on the street by Islam Y., who was on the run and wanted a European arrest warrant.

Numerous punches
He first hit him five times in the head and upper body, causing the 31-year-old to fall to the ground. There he received six kicks to the head and body and another eleven punches to the face. Islam Y. – like the alleged perpetrator and victim of the violence, of Chechen descent – was a mixed martial arts fighter before his imprisonment. He served an eleven-year prison sentence in the Stein correctional institution for, among other things, theft.

Violent act filmed
The man who trapped the 31-year-old filmed the violent act on his mobile phone. The video subsequently circulated in the Chechen community – apparently intended to restore the honor that Islam Y. felt hurt because his cousin’s husband had made negative comments about him. As a result of the punches and kicks, he suffered fractures to his cheekbone and upper jaw.

Where Islam Y. is now is still unknown. Both the suspect and the person who was beaten as a witness emphasized during the trial that they had no idea where the 35-year-old was now. A prize of 5,000 euros is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the fugitive.
