Shortly before holiday time – Bulgaria throws Ukrainian refugees from hotels

Date:

In Bulgaria, war refugees from Ukraine have to be transferred from Black Sea hotels to shelters before the holiday season begins. “Bulgaria can no longer afford to host Ukrainian citizens in beachfront hotels,” Deputy Prime Minister Kalina Konstantinova said in a video message on Monday evening. The transfer should begin in the coming days.

According to the authorities, there are about 90,000 people from Ukraine in the EU country. The tourist season on the Black Sea starts in the first half of June.

Little interest in special trips
Previously, many refugees had refused to move from local hotels to state vacation homes in the interior. There was little interest in specially organized trips by train or bus. According to reports in the Bulgarian media, only 500 refugees took advantage of this opportunity. Many fear that there may be no medical care or shopping facilities in the sometimes remote resort areas.

About 300,000 refugees in the country
Bulgaria is mainly a transit country for war refugees from Ukraine, who mainly travel on to Central Europe. Nearly 300,000 people have come to the country since the war started in late February. According to official figures from Monday, 90,365 refugees remained in Bulgaria. They are accommodated in hotels, but also privately with friends, family or volunteers.
