2,000 Romanians in Italian prisons must return to their home country. This is set out in an agreement signed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her Romanian counterpart Marcel Ciolacu.
In Romania, prisoners must continue to serve their sentences. People from Romania currently make up 11.6 percent of prisoners in Italian prisons. Now the two governments want to work more closely together in the fight against crime. Cooperation in tracking down fugitive criminals and combating illegal immigration must also be intensified.
Overcrowded prisons
About 60,000 people are in Italian prisons, just under a third of them (17,000) are foreigners. However, the capacity is less (51,179). Since overcrowding, suicides in prisons have risen sharply, with 15 cases counted since the beginning of the year alone.
Since many prisoners come from Albania and Morocco, the Italian government is currently planning similar agreements with these countries. In this way, an estimated 150 euros per day could be saved per deported prisoner.
