A beach trip has turned into a nightmare for a family in the US state of Florida: two siblings – a boy and a girl – were buried in the sand while digging on the beach at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. The daughter died as a result of the accident.
The boy and girl, aged seven and five, were both initially taken to a hospital in critical condition after being freed from the sand, according to broadcaster NBC Miami.
Boy saved
Private videos published by news outlets showed adults frantically digging in a sand hole with buckets and shovels. Initially, the father found his boy, but the daughter was still somewhere under the sand, an eyewitness reports to Lokaal10.
1.8 meter deep hole
As a result, the girl is said to have been trapped under the sand for about 15 minutes before rescuers finally managed to free her. According to reports, the hole was up to 1.8 meters deep.
It is unclear how such a large hole could have appeared on the public beach promenade in the southeastern part of the state. According to NBC Miami, there have been previous, sometimes fatal, accidents where sand holes suddenly collapsed and buried people.
