A major search was launched on the Bieler Höhe (Vorarlberg) on Thursday because a German who had gone walking at night went missing. In reality, the man was sleeping unnoticed in a mountain hut.
A 34-year-old German wanted to hike from the mountain hut “Piz Buin” on the Bieler Höhe to the Wiesbadener Hut on Wednesday evening around 7 p.m. – despite darkness and warnings from the hut owner and a mountain guide. The German was not deterred from his plan and started his night walk.
The next morning around 7 a.m., the owner of the Piz Buin hut became concerned and called the Wiesbaden hut to ask about the hiker. However, the hut owner there knew nothing about a hiker and then alerted the emergency services. Based on mobile phone tracking, the search area was limited to the Bieltal, Ochsental and Klostertal. The Partenen Mountain Rescue Service and the Alpine Police, including a police helicopter, took part in the search in the area.
Good luck
At 12 o’clock there was a big surprise, because the person we were looking for suddenly appeared in the dining room of the Wiesbadener Hütte. He stated that he arrived at the cabin at midnight and – without informing the landlord – entered one of the rooms. Then he slept there until noon. He also said that he had had quite a bit of difficulty during the walk. He only found his way to the Wiesbadener Hütte with the help of an app.
