“Now that all allies have approved it, Sweden will become NATO’s 32nd ally. Swedish integration will make us all stronger and more secure,” emphasizes Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General.
The Parliament of Hungary ratified on Monday as planned Sweden’s accession to NATOafter the Hungarian Prime Minister, Victor Orbanannounced last Friday that the necessary decisions would be taken to confirm this accession after the conclusion of a security trade agreement, after postponing the decision for nineteen months. “I welcome the Hungarian parliament’s vote to ratify Sweden’s membership of NATO,” the Alliance’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg celebrated via a message on his X account.
“Now that all allies have approved it, Sweden will become NATO’s 32nd ally. Swedish integration will make us all stronger and safer,” he emphasized.
The vote in the Hungarian Parliament ended favorably with the only negative votes coming from the six representatives of the Hungarian parliamentary elections Our Homeland Movementaccording to the newspaper ‘Magyar Hirlap’.
With this approval, Sweden therefore overcomes its last obstacle to joining NATO after NATO Turkiye’s first restraintwhich accused the Scandinavian countries of harboring Kurdish groups that Ankara considers terrorists, and Hungary, which did not sit well with Sweden’s criticism of the democratic system.
