Can’t bear torture – Iranian rapper in custody begs for execution

Date:

The arrested Iranian rapper Saman Yasin had actually successfully appealed against the death penalty imposed on him. But now the musician called on the judiciary of the Islamic Republic to kill him: he could no longer endure the physical and psychological torture in prison.

The lyrics of his songs were about inequality, oppression and unemployment. That was enough for the Iranian regime to sentence the rapper to death. The specific accusation was: “War against God.” What falls under this offense is not further specified. The prosecutor also accused him of attempting to murder a security guard. He also allegedly set fire to a garbage can – the musician denies this. Yasin eventually appealed the draconian verdict – hoping his case would be reheard.

Prisoner pleads: “Finish it”
But a year after the successful appeal, the rapper has apparently lost the courage to live. BBC Persia published a letter from Yasin in which he pleaded: “Please give me the death penalty. I have no objection and agree. Take my life from me, end it.” He explains that the “mental, emotional and physical problems” he faces in prison must end.

Yasin, of Kurdish descent, was an outspoken critic of the Iranian regime during the protests that broke out in 2022. He spread his views on social media channels.

This is not the first time allegations of torture have been leveled against Iranian authorities: another rapper, Toomaj Salehi, reported suffering during his detention. Yasins, an industry colleague, was briefly released, but early this year he was sentenced to prison again.

Women’s rights activist Mahsa Amini died in 2022 during an arrest by the moral police. This also caused a nationwide wave of protests. Hundreds of protesters have since been killed and tens of thousands arrested.
