Breathe a sigh of relief in the Vatican: Pope Francis is back at work

Date:

There is a sigh of relief in the Vatican: Pope Francis was released from the Gemelli clinic in Rome, which was “fully operational” after investigations, and is holding rescheduled audiences.

The 87-year-old Francis had to undergo various examinations on Wednesday, including a computed tomography. Immediately after the general audience in the audience hall of the Vatican, he was taken in his white Fiat 500 to the church clinic on Tiber Island in Rome on Wednesday morning. Shortly afterwards he left the hospital by car.

He recently suffered from a “mild flu”. Several private audiences were subsequently canceled. Francis, however, held midday prayers on Sunday.

On Wednesday, he held another private audience and received Armenian Catholic bishops at the Vatican. However, an employee read the prepared text aloud – also at the subsequent general audience.

Knee and breathing problems
Francis was last briefly in hospital for examination in November. At that time he had partial pneumonia, which was treated with antibiotics. Since then he has repeatedly suffered from breathing problems. Due to knee problems, he usually uses a wheelchair to get around.
