Following widely feared reprisals against the Russian population at the funeral of slain regime opponent Alexei Navalny, there are increasing reports that mourners have actually been arrested by police.
The non-governmental organization OWD-Info has already counted more than 56 people arrested across the country in connection with the expressions of mourning. Most of them were in Novosibirsk, the organization said on the online service Telegram on Friday. They were taken away in a prison van just for laying flowers.
Six people were taken by police in Moscow, where thousands of people took part in funeral ceremonies for Navalny:
The police wanted to recruit journalists
Independent Russian journalist Vasily Polonsky, who continues to work in Moscow despite all the dangers, reported live on Navalny’s funeral all day long.
According to BBC Russia, he was also arrested. But now he is a free man again. He reveals that the police officers forced him to show his phone. The security forces also tried to recruit him and suggested sending them recordings.
