Presidential primaries – First defeat for Trump in Washington DC

Date:

Two days before ‘Super Tuesday’, ex-president Donald Trump lost the Republican primaries to the opposition for the first time: in the preliminary round in the capital Washington DC on Sunday, his challenger Nikki Haley had the upper hand with 63 percent of the votes, several reported American media.

Trump got only 33 percent. Haley won all 19 delegate votes in the Capital District. Washington DC is considered a stronghold of US President Joe Biden’s Democrats. Trump’s Republicans have no chance there in the elections. The result is therefore considered unrepresentative of the rest of the country. Haley had won the previous seven primaries, but at times performed significantly better than polls had predicted.

Ex-president reacts rudely to bankruptcy
In any case, it is annoying for Trump that he is no longer undefeated in the primaries. He responded to Haley’s victory accordingly. On the platform he co-founded, Truth Social, the ex-president wrote that he “intentionally stayed away from the Washington elections because it is the ‘swamp,’ with very few delegates and no benefits.” Haley, on the other hand, whom he insulted as a “brainhead,” spent all her time, money and effort voting there.

Instead, he had won several other primaries himself this weekend, Trump wrote, speaking of a “complete destruction of a very weak opponent.” Trump’s campaign team dismissed Haley’s success as a sign that she could only score points with the capital’s establishment, but not with ordinary citizens.

Challenger sees “historic result”
Haley’s team, on the other hand, spoke of a historic result: never before had a woman won a presidential primary among American Republicans. It is also “not surprising that the Republicans closest to the dysfunction in Washington reject Donald Trump and all his chaos.”

It is not the first time that Republicans have opposed Trump in the American capital. In the last Republican nominating elections in the District of Columbia in 2016, Trump received less than 14 percent of the vote and no delegates, despite winning the nomination nationally. Washington DC is 100 percent urban and a relatively large share of its residents have a college degree. Many top Republican politicians – including Trump – portray the city as crime-ridden and ruled by excessive elites. Trump’s base is mainly rural and particularly strong in areas with low education levels.

Conquer the strongholds of Missouri and Idaho
Only on Saturday did Trump win the primaries in the Republican strongholds of Missouri and Idaho. Before that, he had won six primaries, including in Haley’s home state of South Carolina. Elections will take place in North Dakota on Monday before fifteen states and one US territory hold their primaries on Super Tuesday. A total of 874 delegate votes will be awarded on this day. Trump currently has 247 delegate votes, Haley has 43. The nomination at the party congress in July requires 1,215 votes.
