An accident on a bridge saw a truck crash through the railing – leaving the driver’s cab dangling over the river. During a dramatic rescue operation, the driver was eventually freed from the difficult situation with the help of a rope system.
Three vehicles were involved in the crash Friday on the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge, which connects the city of Louisville, Kentucky, with southern Indiana. One injured person was immediately taken to a hospital. However, rescuing the truck driver involved was much more complex.
A rope system was set up for 40 minutes to rescue the driver from the cab. A helper approached the victim and managed to get her out of the car. She was taken to hospital as a precaution, reports AP news agency.
Special company was requested
A company was hired for the complicated rescue effort, said Louisville Fire Chief Brian O’Neill. “They train for this stuff all the time,” he explained. “This is a worst-case scenario.” The bridge was closed after the accident. A safety inspection of the bridge should be conducted after all vehicles have been rescued.
