A safari guide recently took extremely special photos in the famous Kruger National Park in South Africa: he was able to film a pink young animal in a herd of African elephants.
Albino elephants are often rejected by their herds, but this young animal – the photos suggest – appears to be fully accepted. Albinism occurs in only one in 10,000 births in African elephants.
Albino elephants are sacred in some countries
In India, Myanmar and Thailand, albin elephants have been seen for centuries as a symbol of the power and fortune of rulers and are considered sacred animals. Until the early 20th century, a white elephant even adorned the flag of Thailand, then called Siam.
Main tourist attraction in South Africa
Kruger National Park is one of the largest national parks in Africa and one of the country’s top tourist attractions. It was established on March 26, 1898 by then President Paul Kruger as a protected area as the ‘Sabie Game Reserve’ before the area was renamed Kruger National Park in 1926.
National park the size of Lower Austria
With almost 20,000 square kilometers, the park is about the size of the state of Lower Austria. It is known for a variety of wildlife such as elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards and buffalos.
