The European Commission believes that Apple has abused its dominant position in the music streaming market through its App Store for decades.
The European Commission on Monday announced a €1.8 billion fine on Apple for abusing its position in the distribution of streaming music for the way it prevents platforms such as Spotify from informing iPhone or iPad users of ways to obtain subscription alternatives for direct access from the online store that the multinational installs on its devices, the App Store.
“For decades, Apple has abused its dominant position in the music streaming market through its App Store,” the vice-president of the Community Executive responsible for Competition, Margrethe Vestager, warned at a press conference to announce the sanction.
Danish policy has insisted that preventing developers from informing consumers about “alternative and cheaper offers available outside the Apple ecosystem” is not only “illegal” but has also impacted “millions of European consumers” who do not did. They could “freely choose” which services you can hire.
The case dates back to 2022, when Brussels accused the company of acting as a ‘gatekeeper’ of access to applications and abusing a dominant position in the streaming music distribution market.
