Following the death of prominent Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny in a Russian prison camp, more than 40 countries have called for an independent international investigation.
According to Russian information, the 47-year-old died of “natural causes”, although the exact circumstances remain unclear. His supporters and numerous Western politicians blame Russian leaders and Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin for the opposition figure’s death. Moscow rejects the accusations.
Moscow does not want to respond to “gross interference”.
“We consider the demands for ‘transparent, independent investigation’ as nothing more than gross interference in the internal affairs of our country,” said a representative of Russia’s OSCE mission in Vienna. He described as “hypocritical” the concerns of “states of the Western alliance” about Russian events or the fate of other criminals in Russia.
After Navalny’s death, authorities refused to hand over the body to his relatives for eight days. They suspected this was an attempt to cover up the authorities’ involvement in his death. Navalny was finally buried in Moscow on Friday, and despite warnings from authorities, scores of supporters flocked to the ceremony.
