Today is International Waste Separation Day. Our country is not bad when it comes to recycling, but there is room for improvement. With the right knowledge, everyone can help save waste and therefore money. Experts explain the urban-rural divide that arises in recycling and why not every plastic can go in the yellow bin.
More than a quarter of the waste produced in Tyrol ends up as residual waste. That does not have to be the case: according to the Tyrolean residual waste analysis 2018/19, more than half of it could be recycled. According to Martin Baumann of the Tyrolean Environmental Association, the rural population here is “better” than in the city: “This is partly due to anonymity. In the countryside, the neighbor talks to me if I don’t part properly.”
That’s a good thing, because recyclable materials contaminated by improper separation pose a major problem for waste management, as Alfred Egger, President of the Tyrolean Waste Management, explains: “For example with organic waste. Small particles are very difficult to filter during composting.” In the worst case, they can end up back in the field with composted waste. Egger warns of a new mistake that will cost a lot of money.
