Obesity is becoming a widespread disease and Austrians are getting fatter. Why is that? How do you get the bacon rolls off permanently? The “Krone” spoke with internist Dr. Marina Hornsteiner speaks.
“Krone”: Why do so many people actually become overweight?
Dr. Marina Hornsteiner: Ultimately it is a question of balance. On one side is energy expenditure, i.e. basal metabolic rate plus exercise, and on the other side of the scale is how much energy I use. The problem today is that many foods are offered – even in advertising – that have a very high energy density, but few nutrients and little satiety. The dietary recommendations, some of which are still used today, date from an earlier time, 60 years ago, when people were more physically active.
