Dr. Ernst Geiger (69) was the lead investigator in the case of the serial killer of women Jack Unterweger thirty years ago. Is the current wave of violence comparable to that time? What’s different today? What does he say as a profiler: can we recognize signals and prevent femicides?
“Kron”: Exactly 30 years ago, you led the investigation into the case of serial killer of women Jack Unterweger. Are you reminded of this when you follow current events? There have already been eight femicides since the beginning of the year, the last five of which occurred in just one weekend.
Dr. Ernst Geiger: No, you cannot compare that, just as you cannot compare current affairs with each other. The Afghan asylum seeker who stabbed three Asian prostitutes out of religious madness has little in common with the manager who recently strangled his wife and 13-year-old daughter, or the 93-year-old retiree who murdered his seriously ill wife and wanted to die himself – except that the victims were women. But not every murder of women is also a murder of women, as it is now called.
