Hatred of Jews is increasing drastically in Austria – this is the frightening conclusion of the anti-Semitism hotline of the Jewish Community of Vienna (IKG). Accordingly, 1,147 anti-Semitic incidents were recorded last year. This corresponds to an increase of 59.5 percent compared to the previous year.
So far, the negative record was 965 anti-Semitic incidents in 2021. This has now been largely exceeded. 2023 was marked by the major attack on Israel by the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas on October 7. The result: an explosive increase in anti-Semitism worldwide.
In Austria, there were an average of 1.55 incidents per day before October 7. The number then rose to 8.31 incidents per day.
As in previous years, a large number of unreported cases can be assumed. “We are dealing with an unprecedented explosion of anti-Semitic incidents,” IKG President Oskar Deutsch said on Wednesday at the presentation of the annual report of the anti-Semitism hotline.
“Anti-Semitism is not a trivial offense”
In connection with anti-Israel demonstrations, Deutsch would like to see faster justice. “Although reports are issued time and time again, it would be important that they also lead to convictions.” “One or two cases” must be dealt with quickly “to show anti-Semites that anti-Semitism is not a trivial offense.”
