Former RAF terrorist Daniela Klette is said to have warned her accomplice Burkhard Garweg when she was arrested. “You have me,” she wrote in a mobile message, German media reported. That would explain why Garweg has not used his cell phone since February 26.
He has been on the run ever since (see video above). ‘We know he pretended to be Martin. He had several aliases, most of them started with Martin,” the head of the Lower Saxony State Criminal Investigation Department (LKA), Friedo de Vries, who led the investigation, told “Zeit”. According to him, Garweg had already covered what he did before Klette’s arrest case: “He must have had a plan (…) in his head.” The detective suspects that Garweg has created a new legend for himself – with false personal data, a constructed CV and contacts that confirm this.
Before his escape, Garweg probably lived in a caravan on a trailer park in Berlin, which is mainly used by the alternative scene. When the police discovered it, Garweg was no longer there.
Exact contact is still unclear
The former terrorist may have been in contact with Daniela Klette until the end. Klette was found based on tips from her neighborhood – the police asked for her with a photo. Upon her arrest, emergency services allegedly allowed the 65-year-old to use the toilet in her apartment. She used this to warn Garweg and then flushed her mobile phone SIM card down the toilet. This could explain why the ex-RAF terrorist has not used his device since February 26. The exact circumstances of the contact have not yet been clarified.
The criticism of the police is loud
The Berlin police union on Thursday expressed unusually sharp criticism of its colleagues in Lower Saxony: “Our question marks are increasing and it is clear that the leading LKA (State Criminal Police) of Lower Saxony must examine this operation self-critically. Considering everything that was found on Mrs. Klette, it is pure luck that she was not waiting behind the door with the bazooka and that none of our colleagues were injured.” Apparently the woman still posed a great danger.
In Berlin there were special units ‘who would ensure that an RAF terrorist would not even help a fellow soldier escape.’ The Berlin police spoke of ‘doing it alone’. Klette, Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub were part of the group. RAF command level. They are accused of robberies with firearms, Klette is also accused of two counts of attempted murder and bombings. The left-wing extremist terrorist organization Red Army Faction carried out numerous attacks and killed people until 1991, and was declared disbanded in 1998.
Demos for left-wing terrorists
Part of the population in Germany is currently showing solidarity with the three suspected left-wing terrorists. Following a controversial demonstration for underground and imprisoned RAF members in Berlin with around 600 participants, a group has announced a new rally in Vechta for Sunday – the motto ‘Solidarity with Daniela’. According to the organizing team, Klette is in the women’s prison in Vechta.
