There are cycling licenses and swimming courses, but in the Alpine regions of Austria, winter is the greatest danger for children. That is why alpine safety is on the agenda in East Tyrol.
“An Alpine police officer came to me completely devastated and said sadly that another child had died while playing winter sports,” recalls mountain guide Franz Holzer from Matrei in East Tyrol. And it was immediately clear to him: “We have to do something!”
Together with mountain guide Toni Riepler, Franz now tours all third grades of middle schools and high schools in the Lienz district every winter to teach young people about safety in the Alps.
The “Bergkrone” was allowed to go to school for a day with the boys and girls of MS Sillian.
