The fact that the Enns has become the target of energy companies strikes a chord in the Styrian region. A citizens’ initiative is forming against the plans for power plants; a referendum should only be used as a last resort.
Helmut Knauß invested more than 100,000 euros and countless hours of work in his big dream. Now everything is in danger of falling apart: “The EU-funded project ‘Ennsflusswandern’ should appeal to rowers from all over Europe. It offers an uninterrupted, 90 kilometer long journey over the Enns – a sensation today,” says the Upper Styrian.
The 48-year-old, who has just completed his online presence, speaks for an entire industry: In recent years, more and more accommodation providers along the Enns have specialized in water sports, and there are several providers of rafting, kayaking and paddling tours on the Internet. “Building a power plant would ruin an entire sector of the economy in one fell swoop,” says Knauß.
