Roman residence – Journalists move into the former Berlusconi Palace

Date:

The Italian Press Association is moving to the former palace of the late ex-Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. The approximately 400 correspondents from around the world work in rooms that for years were Berlusconi’s residence and political office in Rome.

The palace dates from the 17th century and is known in Italy as Berlusconi’s headquarters. The media magnate and former head of government met high-ranking international politicians there, as well as escort ladies. When Berlusconi was in Rome, the Palazzo Grazioli was always surrounded by media professionals. A few bulletproof windows remain from this time. A built-in cupboard shields a ‘secret’ door that the politician used as an escape route.

Berlusconi had rented the palazzo from the owners, the noble Grazioli family, until 2021. He then moved to a quieter villa. On Tuesday, President Sergio Mattarella will inaugurate the new headquarters for foreign journalists. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Industry Minister Adolfo Urso are also expected.

The historic building, which measures 1,600 square meters, has now been redesigned in accordance with the requirements of monument protection. The association has two rooms for press conferences, as the association organizes hundreds of media meetings every year.
