At the end of April 2023, four men are said to have literally executed a 32-year-old Algerian. On Tuesday, the suspects had to return to the dock of the Vienna Regional Court. The main defendant received a life sentence.
The verdict in the machete murder case, which was finalized on Tuesday at the Vienna Regional Court, is four counts of guilty. Prison sentences: two of 17 years, one of 15 years and one of life imprisonment.
Four men from Algeria, aged 21, 22, 25 and 29, were found guilty by the Vienna Regional Court on Tuesday evening in the trial of the so-called machete murder and sentenced to long prison terms. The 22-year-old main defendant was sentenced to life in prison. The 21-year-old received 15 years in prison, the 25 and 29-year-old men each received 17 years in prison.
No chance of survival
The majority of the jury came to the conclusion – unanimously in the case of the 22-year-old – that all four were directly involved in the intentional murder of 31-year-old Djafaar H. According to the verdict at first instance, they killed him at 20 April 2023 at the Jägerstrasse metro station in Vienna-Brigittenau and attacked him with a 70-centimetre-long machete and knives after he was pepper-sprayed, rendering him incapacitated. Due to the large number of injuries sustained and the resulting blood loss, the victim essentially had no chance of survival.
Like their later victim, the Algerians also belonged to a North African drug gang. They likely fell out with the victim over drug disputes and conflict in their shared home country. The situation may have escalated on the night of the crime. The victim’s arms and legs were nearly chopped off with two machetes.
