The young animals were found by passers-by and are now being cared for by people. At the same time, experts warn against only well-intentioned love for animals.
A very special “Easter nest” is currently located at the Haringsee Owl and Bird of Prey Station in the Gänserndorf district. Two brown hare babies are currently being cared for there. Passers-by discovered them in a nearby construction site and brought them there. “There was no shelter nearby where they could have been released. “It was therefore right that they came to us,” says manager Hans Frey. The rodents are now fed up to five times a day until they can drink from the bottle.
Not every baby needs to be saved
Frey also emphasizes that not every baby rabbit needs to be rescued. “It is normal for a young rabbit to sit alone in a hole in the ground all day waiting for its mother,” says Frey. This is because it usually does not go far away in search of food, but does not show itself when potential enemies, including humans, are nearby. “Rescue is only justified if he is visibly injured or if it is proven that the mother is dead,” says Frey, who recommends that if in doubt, always contact a nature center first.
By the way: even if you accidentally touch a young rabbit, you don’t have to take it away immediately. Frey: “Contrary to popular belief, the mother hare certainly continues to care for her young, even though she recognizes humans by their scent.”
