At midnight New York time, the clock would have expired for Donald Trump. If he had not deposited the $454 million with the prosecutor’s office, New York Attorney General Letitia James could have started freezing his accounts and seizing his assets, such as property and real estate.
But it wouldn’t be Donald Trump if he hadn’t pulled his head out of the noose at the last minute. As the New York Times reported on Monday, not only were Trump’s lawyers able to significantly reduce bail to $175 million from the originally requested $454 million — Trump also has 10 days to hand over the money .
There are currently several trials against Trump in the US, the trial with the enormous bail concerns long-standing financial fraud. Trump was fined more than $350 million in February.
With interest, the total amount owed now amounts to the aforementioned $450 million (€415.78 million). Under Judge Arthur Engoron’s decision, Trump was given 30 days to post his bail, which would have expired at midnight on Monday.
However, Trump had asked an appeals court to suspend payment of the fine or initially accept a payment guarantee of only $100 million. The purpose of such a deposit is to ensure that winners in civil lawsuits actually get their money if the loser is unsuccessful on appeal. The path through the agencies can take years.
Previously, there were rumors that the former American president, who wants to stand for re-election this year, would not be able to deposit such a large amount. Trump then asked his supporters for donations – but at the same time emphasized that he obviously has the right resources.
