Film-worthy scenes took place in Graz-Puntigam on Wednesday evening: Unknown perpetrators climbed into a bicycle shop through the roof and grabbed several bicycles with a rope. A cleaner caught them at the last minute.
It is a burglary method that is otherwise only known from crime films: The ‘Rififi method’ goes back to a French film from 1955 – burglars ‘catch’ their loot with a rope that they lower from the ceiling.
Tied by a skylight
In this case too, the unknown perpetrators gained access via the roof of the bicycle shop. On Wednesday evening they smashed a skylight so they could lower the rope with hooks. They ‘fished’ several bicycles from the sales area and rappelled them to the back of the building.
Cleaner turned out to be the heroine of the story
Fortunately, an alert cleaner from a neighboring company spotted the perpetrators as they pushed past the building with their wheels. She followed the path and saw that 15 bicycles were already ready to be picked up. She immediately called the police because her business had also recently been broken into.
Thousands of euros are said to have disappeared
Thanks to their smart tip, the police were able to prevent the perpetrators from running away with the loot. The “fished” wheels are worth almost 10,000 euros. The perpetrators are now being sought; video surveillance from a neighboring gas station was able to capture their faces.
