Kiev calls for fighter jets – first aerial bomb attack on Kharkiv since 2022

Date:

Russia has again launched air strikes on southern and eastern Ukraine. At least three people were killed and about thirty others were injured. According to local police, the attack on the second-largest Ukrainian city of Kharkiv was the first to use aerial bombs since 2022.

At least one person died and 18 others were injured when a guided missile hit several residential buildings in Kharkiv, eastern Ukraine. Among the injured were four children, the smallest of whom was just three months old, regional governor Oleg Sinegubow said. The number of victims could still rise.

Bomb hit school
For the first time in two years, Russian attackers dropped air bombs on residential areas, said Serhii Bolvinov, head of the National Police’s investigative department in the Kharkiv region. One bomb hit a school and the other hit several residential buildings.

There were also attacks in the south: in the Kherson region, a 61-year-old woman was killed in a drone attack on the city of Mykhailivka, according to regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin. Authorities said a 55-year-old man was killed by artillery fire in Nikopol in the southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region. In the neighboring Mykolaiv region, eight people were injured in a ballistic missile attack, according to the local governor.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia targeted thirteen Iranian-made combat drones at targets in Ukraine on Wednesday evening. Ten of them were intercepted over the Kharkov and Sumy regions and near the capital Kiev.

Delivery of fighter jets “of vital importance”
In view of the wave of Russian attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the delivery of more anti-aircraft missiles and fighter jets. Strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses and accelerating the delivery of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine are “critical tasks,” Zelensky wrote. He added: “There are no rational explanations why the Patriot air defense systems, which are available all over the world, “There are plenty of them in the world that still do not cover the skies over Kharkov and other cities.”

New defense lines inspected
Zelensky also visited the northeastern Ukrainian region of Sumy, which borders Russia. There he met wounded soldiers and inspected newly constructed defense lines. “We are strengthening our defense,” Zelenskiy said. Due to a lack of ammunition, Ukraine has been on the defensive in Russia’s war of aggression for several months. Massive US military aid is being blocked in Washington due to a dispute between Republicans and Democrats in Congress.
