Many people in Graz couldn’t believe their eyes on Easter Monday. Lines of scantily clad women lined the Schönau Belt. However, they were not people of flesh and blood, but mannequins who were clearly looking for customers in more or less seductive lingerie. “We chose April 1 to once again draw attention to an urgent problem,” explains nightclub director Rene Wollinger.
Action against illegal residential prostitution
Last year they made headlines for looking for girl testers using posters. “With the current campaign we want to draw attention to illegal residential prostitution in our city,” says Wollinger. From his point of view, this is currently on the rise again. “For us, it’s not just about fighting crime, but also about the significant economic losses that serious businesses like ours suffer as a result.”
“Police need more powers”
Austria is considered a pioneer when it comes to regulation and order in the prostitution industry. “To maintain this status, it is essential that the police in Graz are given more powers to take effective action against such crimes.” In view of this, Wollinger also calls for the imposition of penalties for violations in the case of housing associations. prostitution must be tightened.
However, the police are not currently seeing a drastic increase in this area. “Of course there are isolated cases, but there is no general problem. “It was certainly different during the corona pandemic,” explains Markus Lamb, spokesperson for the state police.
