It is an invasive species and has a successful breeding program: the quagga mussel. It will soon cause millions in damage to Lake Constance. Krone+ explains why the mussel has stuck around and in which Austrian lakes it is causing disaster
The quagga mussel, originally introduced from the Black Sea region, feels completely at home in Lake Constance and therefore reproduces at a breathtaking speed. What is good for the invasive species is bad for all other players in Lake Constance: the ecosystem will change enormously as a result of the mussel’s mass establishment – and in some cases it already has. Fish and fishermen are under pressure – and last but not least, the mollusk also causes damage to the lake’s infrastructure.
