Huge sand cascades have now emerged in North Africa. Air currents are currently transporting billions of these particles towards us – lockdown for allergy sufferers!
It almost seems eerie when the pale yellow shimmers on the horizon and the sky shimmers like in a watercolor! This natural phenomenon is being announced again this weekend – and Sunday could see the earliest warm day since weather records began (see video above). With an air mass from northwest Africa that is extremely warm for the time of year, unimaginable masses of dust in the atmosphere are expected to be catapulted all the way to Europe from Sunday.
As has been reported several times in the “Krone”, the particles in concentrated cloud masses last passed over Austria at high altitude on Great Saturday – bathing the sky in light to soft yellow. The most visible sign of these messengers from the desert: the brilliant white of the local glaciers and even the last snowfields had suddenly changed color.
Nutrients such as calcium and magnesium
This is by no means a disadvantage, especially for the world’s most sensitive and climate-relevant paradises. The approximately 500 million tons of dust produced annually in the Sahara plays an essential role in supplying the forests with vital substances due to their huge contribution of nutrients such as calcium and magnesium. For example, 40 million tons of these substances reach the Amazon rainforests every year. But Sahara dust also contributes to ‘atmospheric’ fertilization on the Iberian Peninsula.
The influence on climate events has not yet been fully investigated. But the dust in the atmosphere is not only the cause of spectacular orange-red sunrises and sunsets, it is also likely to have a direct influence on weather events.
Sahara dust meets pollen bloom
“It has been proven that aerosols dampen solar radiation and therefore temperatures, but that could also alleviate the melting in our Alpine regions at least a little and seasonally,” says honorary chairman of the environmental umbrella organization Gerhard Heilingbrunner. Nevertheless, the “cloudburst-like” yellow air tax means something like a lockdown for hundreds of thousands of allergy sufferers. Mainly because it increases in strength as the pollen blooms. It is not yet possible to predict exactly when the meteorological horror will be over.
