After the killing of seven aid workers in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army fired two officers. In addition, high-ranking commanders would be formally reprimanded, the army announced on Friday. Research shows that serious mistakes were made during the air raid.
There were also violations of operational regulations. The incident under investigation took place on Monday evening. As reported, Israeli forces attacked a convoy of the World Central Kitchen aid organization with drones (see video above). They wrongly assumed that they were targeting vehicles of armed Hamas fighters. The deaths of the aid workers led to worldwide outrage and sharp criticism of the Israeli army.
An army investigation was published on Friday. The result: the incident was a “serious failure.” The orders and instructions were not followed and the three bombed vehicles were said to be clearly marked.
Aid organization: changes needed
Chief of the General Staff Herzi Halevi has now decided to dismiss a responsible commander and the chief of staff of the responsible brigade from their positions. World Central Kitchen called the investigation and dismissal “important steps forward.”
At the same time, fundamental changes are necessary. “Without systemic change, there will be more military failures, more excuses and more grieving families,” the Washington-based organization wrote. Her team followed “all proper communication procedures.”
The seven volunteers who died wanted to distribute food to the civilian population. They came from Australia, Poland, Great Britain and the Palestinian territories. One victim had dual US and Canadian citizenship.
