The number of Covid 19 cases in Brazil has risen sharply in recent weeks. The Brazilian Ministry of Health reported 41,273 new infections within 24 hours on Thursday. Two weeks earlier, the number was 10,415. In view of the approaching winter in the southern hemisphere, epidemiologists are already talking about the beginning of a fourth wave.
“This increase can be explained by the end of indoor mask wearing, the onset of the cold season, the emergence of omicron subvariants and a low uptake of booster vaccinations,” said Espíritu Santo University epidemiologist Ethel Maciel.
Masks recommended for indoors again
The death toll on Thursday was 127, only slightly higher than in previous weeks. However, the state government of Sao Paulo has again recommended the use of masks indoors as the number of hospitalizations for Covid patients more than doubled in May.
Since the first corona outbreak in March 2020, the pandemic has claimed nearly 667,000 lives in Brazil, the world’s worst score after the United States.
