Incident at Vienna-Schwechat Airport: An Austrian Airlines Airbus was seriously damaged after a collision on the ground last weekend. An investigation has been started.
“We confirm that damage to one of our A320neo aircraft occurred outside the aircraft’s operation, i.e. without crew and passengers on board. An investigation has been launched into the cause and extent of the damage,” the aviation magazine Austrian Wings quoted an AUA spokeswoman as saying on Sunday.
Tail plane torn off
According to Austrian Wings, the aircraft’s right horizontal stabilizer was torn off (apparently during maneuvering operations) and a passenger bridge was struck.
Machine came from London
The Airbus landed from London earlier Saturday at 10:37 p.m. Although the flight was uneventful, the incident occurred later on the ground. According to official information, the machine delivered in June 2023 “apparently collided with a high-voltage pylon and a passenger bridge.”
It is still unclear whether the accident occurred while rolling under its own power or during a towing maneuver by a pushback vehicle. It is also still unclear whether the accident was the responsibility of the pilots or a member of the ground crew at Vienna Airport.
The specialists at AUA Technology must now assess whether the machine can still be repaired.
