Illegal apartments have now been discovered in Vienna-Brigittenau. The City of Vienna’s Direct Measures Group found the apartments in an office building that was not declared as such during checks with the police, the financial police, the Vienna networks and municipal departments 15, 36 and 37. A landlord was arrested.
The authorities found serious violations of construction law and electrical engineering law. According to the Direct Measures group, the office building had been converted into apartments without permission since March 2024, housing numerous people in 18 residential units.
Electricity theft was also discovered
Some work was not yet completed, especially on the upper floors. In addition to illegal use, Wiener Netze also discovered 25 cases of electricity theft and initiated proceedings under the Electrical Engineering Act.
Excess rent paid in cash
An inspection of the apartments revealed that the excessively high rents had to be paid in cash by the residents. During the official proceedings, a person appeared who, after intensive interrogation, stated that he had rented the entire building and had used a fake company to issue the rental agreements.
The police have arrested the landlord. “Housing space is valuable, illegal housing is unacceptable,” emphasizes Walter Hiller, head of the immediate measures group.
