The actor, television host and former American football player Orenthal James Simpson, better known as OJ Simpson, has died at the age of 76 after a long illness. His family announced it in a publication on the social network X:
OJ Simpson, considered one of the best runners of all time in American football. His sports resume includes eleven seasons in the NFL (National Football League), although this legacy was overshadowed by the stabbing murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and a friend in June 1994. The former football player, who tried to avoid capture and led a police chase moviewas eventually acquitted in 1995.
However, thirteen years after that trial that found him innocent, Simpson was on trial again, this time in Las Vegas, for, along with another man, robbing two sports memorabilia dealers at gunpoint after breaking into their hotel room. He was convicted of twelve charges of armed robbery and kidnapping and sentenced to 33 years in prison. Simpson served his sentence at the Lovelock Correctional Center (Nevada). He was released on parole in October 2017 and was considered “a completely free man” in 2021.
Simpson went on to have a successful acting career, with roles in dramatic films The Cassandra Bridge Capricorn One, The burning monsterand comedies Back to the beach and the trilogy The naked gun alongside Leslie Nielsen, but also in the television miniseries Carrots.
